Homemade Irish Cream is rich, creamy, and takes just seconds to whip up – no special skills required! All you need is six ingredients and a blender.
I first started making my own Irish cream because I wanted a fresher, thriftier version of my favorite creamy liqueur, . It turns out, it’s ridiculously easy to make and tastes just as good as store-bought! Plus, it’s endlessly versatile. Sip it straight as a shot, drizzle it over ice cream, , or use it to add a boozy touch to cakes, , and . And with St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner, it’s the perfect festive treat to have on hand.
Despite its name, Irish cream isn’t actually a centuries-old Irish tradition. It was created in the 1970s to make Ireland’s famous whiskey more accessible to a wider audience. By blending it with creamy, sweet flavors, it softened the whiskey’s bold taste and made it more approachable. (A stroke of marketing genius, I say!) Making your own lets you control the flavors, and enjoy a fresher, more customizable version.
6 Ingredient Irish Cream
Again – you won’t believe how easy this is. With just six simple ingredients, you can create rich Irish cream that rivals the brand name stuff. Sweetened condensed milk provides the perfect balance of sweetness and thickness, while heavy cream gives it a velvety texture. A touch of instant espresso powder and chocolate syrup along with vanilla bean paste gives the signature Irish cream flavor. And of course, no Irish cream would be complete without a generous pour of smooth Irish whiskey. I recommend .
Add Ingredients to a Blender Pitcher
Pour all of the ingredients into the pitcher of your blender. Using a blender makes the process quick and ensures a smooth, well-mixed liqueur without any risk of curdling.
Blend on LOW
This is the key step. Blend everything on low speed for about 20 seconds. Then, scrape down the sides, blend for another 10 seconds, and stop. Over-blending can cause the heavy cream to thicken too much, so keep it brief!
Fill the Bottles
Use a funnel to pour your homemade Irish cream into sterilized glass bottles. Seal them tightly, and they’ll stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to two months. You can find the set of swing-top bottles I used – they even come with a funnel!
Irish Cream Labels
I’ve designed some cute PDF labels that you can download and attach to your bottles (link below). They make the bottles fun for gifting, or it’s just a nice way to dress up your homemade liqueur. Along with the PDF, you’ll need 2×3 clear printable labels, , and an inkjet printer.
Irish Cream Serving Suggestions
So, you’ve made your first batch – now what? There are endless ways to use this delicious sweet liqueur. Serve it in a rocks glass over ice, mix it into your afternoon coffee, drizzle it over desserts, or make a cocktail! Espresso martinis and are the first that come to mind.
I love serving these as fancy little shots topped with whipped cream and coffee beans. And particularly, in little handled shot glasses. You can find them for purchase.
This is such a simple and fun treat to enjoy and even more fun to gift! I hope you love it as much as I do – cheers!

Equipment
- electric blender
- 8.5 oz. sterilized bottles with lids
Ingredients
Instructions
- Place all of the ingredients in the pitcher of an electric blender.
- Blend on low speed until combined, about 20 seconds. Scrape down the sides of the pitcher and blend again briefly, about 10 seconds.
- Serve immediately, or funnel the mixture into glass bottles or jars.
- Store the bottles of Homemade Irish Cream in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.
Notes
- Blending Tip: Blend on low speed to prevent the heavy cream from thickening too much. Over-blending can cause the mixture to become too thick to pour.
- Coffee Substitutes: If you don’t have instant espresso powder, you can use 1 teaspoon of instant coffee instead. The flavor will be slightly milder but still delicious.
- Vanilla Options: Vanilla bean paste adds a richer, more pronounced vanilla flavor, but you can substitute it with vanilla extract if that’s what you have on hand.
- Whiskey Choices: Jameson is a classic choice, but feel free to use your favorite Irish whiskey for a customized flavor.
- Storage: Store homemade Irish cream in the refrigerator for up to 2 months. Shake well before each use, as slight separation is natural.
- Serving Ideas: Enjoy it over ice, stirred into coffee, drizzled over desserts, or mixed into cocktails like an Espresso Martini or Mudslide.
