Easy 4th of July Snack Board (with Quick Party Appetizers)


This easy 4th of July Snack Board is packed with patriotic appetizers that come together with simple grocery store shortcuts. Mini hot dogs, cheeseburger meatballs, apple pie shooters and more create a colorful grazing board that’s perfect for entertaining.

Summer is generally seen as a time of leisure and relaxation – school’s out, vacations are planned, and everyone wants to be outside. But for me, it feels busier than ever. I know that for many, this season is filled with outdoor projects, childcare logistics, birthdays, weddings, and a general uptick of social obligations that require planning and prep. So I appreciate a few simple entertaining shortcuts, especially when serving a crowd. I thought you might too.

This board is a one-stop snacking station, where party guests can graze or fill a plate. Most of these American favorites are ready-made or heat-and-eat which really cuts down on prep time while still staying totally festive.

Here’s the menu – everything assembles easily without having to follow much of a recipe. It has savory appetizers, patriotic sweets – there’s something for everyone. Mix and match your favorites, or recreate the entire spread for your own party.

Mini Hot Dogs

How cute are these? I first made these last year when Food Network invited me to create a for the movie release. It was so much fun, and the mini dogs were a hit! I just knew they’d be perfect as a July Fourth appetizer.

How to Make Them: Slice soft dinner rolls (such as Hawaiian Rolls) in half across the top without cutting all the way through. Boil mini cocktail sausages (I used Little Smokies) in water for 5 minutes, or until plump. Tuck one sausage into each roll. Finish with a squiggle of yellow mustard on top. Place in white cupcake papers and arrange on your snack board.

Cheeseburger Meatball Skewers

These are like mini cheeseburgers but the meatball halves are the ‘bun’. They are too easy to make using homestyle meatballs from the freezer section at the grocery store.

How to Make Them: Thaw frozen homestyle meatballs (not Italian-style – homestyle has a more traditional hamburger flavor). Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and cook the meatballs until they’re heated through and nicely browned on the outside.

Slice each meatball in half to create a “top bun” and “bottom bun.” Starting with the bottom half, layer on a small square of cheddar cheese, a dill pickle slice that’s been patted dry, and two cherry tomato slices. Finish with the top half of the meatball, then insert a toothpick or cocktail skewer straight down through all of the layers to hold everything together. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Tip: If meatballs won’t sit upright, place them in mini silver foil cupcake wrappers. They will stand up straight, plus they look a little bit like foil burger wrappers.

Patriotic Cheese and Crackers

Kiddos will love to help with this one! You’ll need some cookie cutters and mozzarella cheese slices. I used 3″ letter cutters and various star-shaped cookie cutters.

How to Make Them: Arrange cheese, crackers, and salami on a platter as desired. Use cookie cutters to stamp star shapes and USA letters from mozzarella cheese slices. Arrange the pieces on top of the cheeses and salami.

Fun Patriotic Food Finds

Since this year marks America’s 250th birthday, there are lots of fun themed grocery items and snack food everywhere. I picked up this dipped in red, white, and blue wax. American flag crackers and star spangled pretzels were perfect for this appetizer board. These are all from my local grocery store.

Pizza Bagels

Every snack board needs a little pizza – which happens to introduce a simple party hack. Start with frozen cheese pizza bagels, then give them a quick upgrade with more shredded mozzarella and . They look more homemade and are definitely a crowd favorite.

How to Make Them: Arrange frozen cheese pizza bagels on a baking sheet. Top each one with additional shredded mozzarella cheese and a few mini pepperoni slices. Bake according to the package directions until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Let cool for 2 to 3 minutes before transferring them to your snack board.

Fun Extras

Red, White, and Blue Chips and Salsa: The little finishing touches are what really make this snack board feel complete. A bowl of spicy red salsa paired with blue and white tortilla chips completes the patriotic color trifecta while adding something fresh and zesty to balance all the richer appetizers.

Ranch Dressing? YES!: I also couldn’t resist adding a bowl of ranch dressing. Americans’ love of ranch has become an during the World Cup. Fans are dipping everything from pizza to fries (and they are pretty good with cheeseburger meatballs, too!). Who can blame them? It’s the perfect creamy dip for just about every savory thing on this board.

Apple Pie Shooters

There’s an age-old discourse about whether apple pie is American or not (spoiler alert, ). However, it’s an established hallmark and nothing else quite says American like apple pie. (Unless it’s Ranch. See previous paragraph.) These little apple pie shooters are such an easy way to round out the board with something sweet. It uses just 3 ingredients, and takes very little time to assemble.

How to Make Them: Use a to cut shapes from a sheet of refrigerated ready-made pie dough. Place the stars on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake at 400°F for about 5 minutes, or until lightly golden. Let cool completely.

Crumble one ready-made apple pie (approximately 1lb. 6.5 oz.) with a fork, then divide it among 12 shot glasses. Spoon or pipe real whipped cream or whipped topping over each serving, then garnish with the cooled pie crust stars.

Tip: Only use whipped heavy cream or whipped topping such as Cool Whip. Aerosol whipped cream has no staying power and will melt away in minutes.

Pretzel Sparklers and Star Marshmallow Skewers

These sweets will add a little sparkle to your 4th of July Snack Board. Dressed in hues of red, white, and blue and arranged upright in glasses will help add color and height to the arrangement. Best of all they’re incredibly simple to make and kids absolutely love them.

How to Make Pretzel Sparklers: Dip pretzel rods about halfway into melted white almond bark, letting the excess drip away. Immediately roll the coated portion in red or blue sparkling sanding sugar until completely covered. While the coating is still wet, use a dab of extra melted almond bark to attach a silver star sprinkle to each pretzel. Let the coating harden completely, then stand the pretzel sparklers upright in a drinking glass or mason jar on your snack board for a festive fireworks-inspired display.

How to Make Star Marshmallow Skewers: Thread three Jet-Puffed Star Marshmallows onto each wooden skewer. Drizzle the marshmallows with melted white almond bark, then immediately decorate with red, white, and blue patriotic sprinkles. Let the coating set completely before arranging the skewers on the snack board.

Watermelon Wedges

Is it even the Fourth of July without juicy watermelon? I think not! Sweet and refreshing, these slices are the perfect way to add fresh fruit to this snack board. I think it’s an essential addition, because there’s no other fruit that evokes the feelings of summertime like watermelon does.

How to Make Them: These wedges were cut from a single personal-size melon (3-4 lbs.) and provide just the right size wedges to fit on a snack board. Simply slice the melon into 1″ rounds, then cut each round into quarters and the cut the quarters in half (each round will yield 8 small wedges). This small size is so easy to grab and enjoy.

Tip: Choose a seedless watermelon for the easiest snacking.

This was fun to make and so cute for patriotic holidays – and you barely have to cook anything! It’s one of those party spreads that looks like you spent hours on it, when really you’re just using a few easy shortcuts to make everyday foods feel more special.
